What Affiliate Networks are and Why You Should Consider Using Them
Affiliate networks house many opportunities for affiliate marketers in one location. Instead of one affiliate program for one company, affiliate marketing networks act like malls; several companies are represented and the affiliate marketer can choose which products and which companies to represent. The network keeps track of sales and pays the affiliate marketer. Once a marketer signs up with the network, he or she can then begin affiliate marketing the products they choose without having to sign up or register with the individual companies.
Digital Products
Some affiliate networks market digital products and others market physical products. Some market a combination of the two. Buyers are able to download digital products immediately after purchase; these products may range from ebooks to diet solutions to ringtones and more. Sellers are able to track their sales using tools the network provides. In addition, before affiliate marketers choose which products theyll promote, they are able to see how well the products are selling and have a look at the products sales page.
Commissions
The rate of commission, or referral fees, as they are sometimes called, can vary widely with affiliate networks. One product may give you a 25% commission while another product may pay a 75% rate of commission. While it may seem like a no-brainer to choose the product that pays the higher rate of commission, that is not always a good idea. This is true not only for affiliate networks but for all affiliate programs. Think about it: just because a product pays a high rate of commission doesnt mean youll make more money promoting it. After all, 75% of zero is still zero. What you are looking for is products that sell so be sure and look at the rate of conversion when you have the opportunity to do so.
Get One Paycheck for Promoting Multiple Products
One of the advantages to working your affiliate marketing business through affiliate networks is that youll be paid for the sales of all your products at one time from one company. Therefore, it may be more convenient for you to associate yourself with an affiliate network rather than with multiple companies. It may come down to which products you are willing to promote; if you are already marketing in a certain niche then you may need to look for products that will go along with that particular niche. One thing is certain: since it costs nothing to be an affiliate marketer, experimenting is essentially free of charge. While you may spend a little time narrowing down your choices, you wont have to put up an investment to test the waters.
Set Realistic Goals for Your Affiliate Marketing Business

Many beginning affiliate marketers quickly give up after they realize theyre not going to become rich overnight. While it is possible to make good money with affiliate marketing, it wont happen overnight and it will take a lot of hard work.
Dont Listen to the Hype
You may come across sales pages that offer you the opportunity of a lifetime to make a gazillion dollars in just a few days if youll just buy a report or a guide or a video or whatever. Dont fall for it. Although there are some good affiliate marketing books and tools on the market that may be able to offer you sound guidance, any program that promises you will go from rags to riches isnt going to help you, it is just going to take your money.
Make a Plan
Whenever you start any business, you need a sound business plan and affiliate marketing is no different. Whether you decide to work full-time or part-time as an affiliate marketer, you need to have a plan of action. Youll need to do some independent research to see which affiliate programs interest you and you may need to build one or more websites. Youll also need to develop a budget and figure out how much time you can initially devote to your new career in affiliate marketing.
How Much Money Do You Want to Earn?
This may seem like a silly question but it is one that youll need to ask yourself. After all, if you want to earn thousands of dollars a month as an affiliate marketer, you had better plan on spending quite a bit of time and energy working. Even then, it will take time to build up your business and there are no guarantees.
While it is true that you can start your career as an affiliate marketer without any upfront investment, its also true that in order to grow your business, you will have some expenses along the way. While many affiliate marketers never pay for advertising, most of them do have websites. Websites dont necessarily cost a lot of money to build or maintain; in fact, the expense is quite low, especially when you compare it to the monthly rent on a brick and mortar storefront. However, you should be prepared to spend some money growing your business.
Dont Give Up
Affiliate marketing can be a fun and lucrative career but success wont come overnight. But for those who are willing to work hard, learn, and be patient, the rewards can be awesome!
Marketing Tips for the Successful Affiliate

Its easy to learn the basics of affiliate marketing just by researching the Internet but there are some important points that seasoned affiliate marketers have learned through experience. Consider the following:
Market to People, NOT to Search Engines
If youve been interested in Internet marketing or affiliate marketing for very long then chances are youre familiar with Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short. Countless articles, blogs, and books have been written about SEO, which if used properly, is supposed to help rank your websites at the top of the search engine results. The problem is that all too often, affiliate marketers try so hard to market to the search engines that they completely forget about marketing to their customers. In the end, if customers dont find your site compelling, it wont matter how high in the search results your site is ranked; customers may click on it and enter it but if they dont find what theyre looking for, theyll quickly leave.
If Customers Like Your Website, so will the Search Engines
If, instead of concentrating on search engine marketing, you concentrate on offering a useful website to customers, youll discover that the search engines will follow suit. The truth is, search engines usually like what the customer likes. Now, this doesnt mean that things like keywords and meta tags arent important, it just means that customers are more important. Customers are looking for fresh, relevant content that will help them solve their problems, whatever they are. Maybe they are just looking for information, maybe they are looking to buy something; either way, solve their problems and they wont just click on your site, theyll hang around awhile and maybe even buy something. Its important to learn early in your affiliate marketing career how important customers are.
So Many Choices
No matter which niche you choose to market in or which products you choose, you are likely not the only one promoting those products, or at least similar ones. Competition is keen and savvy affiliate marketers go the extra mile to make their websites user friendly, attractive, and full of useful information. Anyone can slap up a website filled with links to a gazillion products but customers want more than that, much more.
Think about some of the sites you visit and why you visit them. Also, think about the websites you may visit but quickly leave. Your potential customers will leave for the same reasons you do. You may have to experiment with a few different variations before you hit the right combination but you wont go wrong if you keep customers and not the search engines in mind when you are planning, designing, and updating your websites.
Keep Your Affiliate Marketing Business Organized

Affiliate marketing is a business just like any other and like every other business, organization is an important key to the success of the business. From the very beginning, youll want to practice good affiliate management strategies and techniques. Although it may not seem like it in the beginning, you will amass a huge amount of information regarding your affiliate marketing business and time spent looking for information later could cost you money.
Spreadsheets
Using spreadsheets is an effective way to keep track of your affiliate marketing business. Even if you dont currently have a spreadsheet application on your computer, there are free ones available online so dont think you have to run out and buy software for affiliate management.
If you already know how to use a spreadsheet, then youll be able to jump right in but if you have never used a spreadsheet before, dont be intimidated. You wont have to know complicated formulas or spreadsheet applications in order to keep your information organized.
Keep it Simple
A spreadsheet is essentially nothing more than a grouping of rows and columns. While most spreadsheet applications can do much more than indicated here, all you really need is simple organization for your affiliate marketing business. You need to keep track of which affiliate marketing programs you are using, your affiliate links, user names and passwords for each program, information about commission rates, and, of course, youll also want to keep track of sales.
Bookmark Websites
Take the time right from the beginning to bookmark all of the websites that are important to your affiliate marketing business. In fact, dont just add them to your favorites, but create corresponding folders within your favorites folder so that you can easily find the sites you are looking for. If you dont take this step, youll find yourself searching through hundreds of websites when you need to find the one youre looking for.
Set up Your Email
It is crucial that you have a reliable email program that you can organize effectively for your affiliate marketing business. Sometimes, the companies that you represent will run special promotions for a very short time and they will send out email notices to all their affiliates. In order to make sure you receive these notices, youll want to set up filters, add the appropriate email addresses to your address book, and make sure that you are using an email provider that filters out the bulk of the Spam youll receive.
Affiliate marketing really is a fun business to get involved in and the potential to make a nice income from it is promising. Realize, though, how important affiliate management is from the very beginning and youll be on your way to affiliate marketing success!
How to Choose the Right Affiliate Programs

If you’re excited about affiliate marketing, and you should be, make sure you take the time to properly research any company you are thinking of doing business with as an affiliate. While there are hundreds and hundreds of affiliate programs from which to choose, it will be wise to be selective so that you are getting the best possible revenue from all of your hard work.
Read Everything
Make sure you read all of the policies and Terms of Service for each affiliate program you are applying to represent. Usually, you will have to fill out an application and wait a couple of days for it to be approved, especially if you are submitting a website that you will place affiliate links on. When you access the application, you will have an opportunity to read all of the requirements. This can be a pain, but do read these terms and conditions for two reasons: (1) You want to make sure the Terms of Service are satisfactory to you; that is, do you want to represent this company and promote their products? (2) You want to make sure you comply with all the requirements and avoid doing anything that would get your site banned from the program. After all, if you dont know what the rules are, how can you be sure you are following them?
Stick with Well Known Companies at First
If youre new to affiliate marketing, you might want to stick to well known companies until you learn the ropes. Unfortunately, although the Internet is full of money making opportunities, it also has its share of scams. Fortunately, there are so many well known companies that participate in affiliate marketing that you couldnt represent them all if you tried so you will still have a large menu to choose from.
Be Aware of How and When They Pay
When you read the Terms of Service, youll read about how often you will get paid, the rate of commission at which youll be paid, and which method you will be paid with. Many affiliate programs pay through PayPal; others send out checks. Also, be aware that many of these programs have a threshold that you must reach in order to be paid. For example, you may have to earn $100 in commissions before you are paid at all. While many affiliate programs have a minimum you must earn before you will be paid, some of them are as low as $10 or $25.
Do They Offer a Money Back Guarantee to Their (and Your) Customers?
Customers like to shop with companies that offer a money back guarantee. It makes them feel more secure and you will likely do better if you promote products from companies that offer such a guarantee. Also, notice what kind of customer service the company offers. After all, if they dont take care of their customers, they wont have many customers to take care of. That means you wont have many customers either.
Do your homework, read the Terms of Service, and if all else fails, you can always move on to another affiliate program. You may try several in the beginning until you find the ones that suit you the best.
How to Choose One or More Niches for Your Affiliate

How to Choose One or More Niches for Your Affiliate Marketing Business
Niche marketing is one way that affiliate marketers use to promote their products. A niche is simply an area of expertise or interest such as dogs or health and fitness. Of course, those categories are quite broad and the savvy Internet marketer will drill down into those subjects to come up with a more specialized area. For example, taking the subject of dogs, you could then come up with a variety of subjects related to dogs upon which you could base your niche. It could be dog training, specialized doggy diets, canine health, or a variety of other subjects related to dogs.
Consider Your Interests and Hobbies
What are you interested in that others might be interested in too? This is a great place to start when trying to come up with a niche in which to begin your affiliate marketing career. After all, if you know something about a subject, it will be easier to talk about it and if youre excited about something, that excitement will show through in your content. Conversely, if you choose a niche just because it is popular but you have no real interest in it then you run the risk of your ambivalence showing through as well.
What would You Like to do or Know?
Have you always wanted to know more about hang gliding, skiing, or ventriloquism? Even if you dont yet know very much about your affiliate marketing niche, if you have the interest in learning more, you could still become somewhat of an expert and develop content that would interest others. Once you develop your website with interesting content, you will want to scour the Internet for appropriate products to promote.
Keywords, Keywords, Keywords!
Many affiliate marketers rely on keywords to tell them which niche they will market in. They do keyword searches to find out what people are searching for and interested in, and therefore, more likely to spend money on. Keywords are important but it must be stressed again not to rely solely on keywords. Another important consideration is how many sites are already up and running for those keyword searches. Although you will have competition regardless of which niche you choose to market in, you dont want to get started in a niche that is already over saturated.
To be successful in affiliate marketing, you will likely experience some trial and error. It is important to do your research and it is also important to remain flexible. A good rule of thumb might be to choose niches in which there are significant keyword searches and for which you also hold some interest.
How to be an Affiliate Marketer without having a Website

How to be an Affiliate Marketer without having a Website
Not every affiliate marketer has a website, at least not in the beginning. Sure, you will probably want to have one or more websites to promote your products but if you need to make some money before you can pay to have a website then you can do it with affiliate marketing. Try your hand at the following until you have a website. You may find that after you do get your own website that you wish to continue some of the following affiliate marketing methods as well.
Article Marketing
Many affiliate marketers use article marketing to promote their affiliate products, even those affiliate marketers that do have their own websites. Thats because, if you have a talent for writing, article marketing is a relatively easy way to promote your products. Some affiliate marketers even pay writers to write articles for them so that they can participate in article marketing.
The basic premise of article marketing is to write informational articles about your products and then submit those articles to article directories. While not all article directories will let you include an affiliate link in the actual article, you will be permitted to do so at the end of the article in what is known as the resource box. This is the place where you can include a short bio and direct readers to the pitch page or sales page of your product if you dont have your own website. Again, even if you do have your own website, article marketing is a good way to get free advertising for your site.
Discussion Forums
If your product has anything to do with a relatively popular subject, there is bound to be online forums that discuss the subject. You can join these communities for free and many of them will let you include a link to your website or to the website of the product you are promoting. The key to being successful at forum marketing is to become a valued member of the online community. Anyone who posts just to sell a product will immediately be shown the door so dont try joining an online forum just to post messages about how great or how cheap your product is. Instead, join in the discussion, and when you really have something relevant to say, enter a post and include the link to your products sales page at the end of your post.
Forum marketing is a popular way Internet marketers and affiliate marketers use to drive traffic to their sites. And remember, even if you dont have your own website yet, you can post links that will lead right to your products sales page and when others make a purchase, youll make a commission!
Other Methods
There are also other methods you can use in your affiliate marketing business when you dont have your own website. You can purchase advertising on someone elses website, write an ebook that contains links to your products and develop an email campaign. Still, it is usually best to use several different methods, at least until you find the one that works best for you but you can begin your career with affiliate marketing without a website.
How to be a Successful Affiliate Marketer

If at first you dont succeedThis famous quote may need to become your mantra when you embark on a career in affiliate marketing. Thats not because it is so difficult to find success as an affiliate marketer but because you may have to try different techniques and strategies until you find the one that works best for you. Many a would be affiliate marketer gives up long before they find success because they didnt realize how much work is really involved in affiliate marketing.
Make a Commitment
Even if you just start out promoting one product, make the commitment to go through all the processes necessary to succeed. Do your research, find the right products to promote, experiment with different marketing strategies, keep careful records, and build an exciting website that others will find engaging, informative, and helpful.
Do it Again
Once youve discovered the secret to making money as an affiliate marketer, you will be ready to replicate your success. This may involve promoting more products, building more websites, or a combination of the two. Or, you may decide that youre satisfied with your current level of success and choose instead to spend your time and energy maintaining and updating your website so that you can enjoy continued success.
Dont make the mistake of spreading yourself too thin as many of those in affiliate marketing have done. When you spread yourself too thin and attempt to build more websites than you can pay attention to, your sales will eventually suffer and this could have a snowball effect. It is far better to keep a few well maintained websites than to build so many you cant keep up with them.
Keep up With Trends and Technology
Successful affiliate marketers know that change is inevitable and they keep up with the changing market. What may fly off the proverbial shelves today may not sell at all tomorrow so it is important to stay on top of market trends even when you are enjoying success. Technology that is hot one day will often be obsolete the next day and this can impact your business as well so it is important to stay on top of technological advances.
If you educate yourself about affiliate marketing and have a commitment to work hard and succeed then there is every reason to believe that you will soon join the ranks of successful affiliate marketers. Affiliate marketing offers you the chance to be your own boss and set your own schedule, something millions of people yearn to do. Success is yours if you want it badly enough.
How Important are Keywords to the Affiliate Marketer?
March 12, 2010 by Allen Lundy
Keywords are an important tool for any Internet marketer and that includes those who do affiliate marketing. While its tempting for some marketers to place too much emphasis on keywords and not enough emphasis on creating quality content, not realizing the value of keywords is just as dangerous.
Keyword Searches
Beginning affiliate marketers can use free keyword search tools to help them ascertain what people are searching for but most successful affiliate marketers recommend one of the more sophisticated keyword search subscriptions once you can afford it. While its not necessary to spend money on keyword subscription lists to get started in affiliate marketing, it might be something you want to consider after you get your feet wet and have come up with a budget for related business expenses. After all, if your keyword subscription results in more traffic to your website, it could mean more revenue for you, especially if that traffic results in paying customers.
Keywords in Content
Once you have nailed down your keywords, then you must tackle the strategic placement of them in your content. This is a critical step in the affiliate marketing process that must be handled with a great deal of care. You have no doubt seen essentially useless websites that are little more than keyword stuffed, built not for customers, but for the search engines. Dont fall prey to this form of affiliate marketing as it will likely fall apart in the long run and it wont even serve you well in the short term.
Internet and affiliate marketers have different ideas of what the appropriate keyword density is; that is, the number of times a keyword appears for every 100 words of written content. Some think a keyword density of 1% is best and others believe that a keyword density of 2% or 3% is even better. You will need to decide the keyword density that is best for your content. The most important thing is to fill that content with relevant information that your customers and potential customers will find useful. Keyword stuffed content that has no useful information to offer may initially drive traffic to your website but if that traffic, that is potential customers, dont hang around long enough to make a purchase, then youve wasted your time and efforts. Furthermore, search engines wont rank your site very high, at least not for very long with content that is obviously keyword stuffed.
Dont Spend a Ton of Money on Affiliate Marketing Paraphernalia
March 11, 2010 by Allen Lundy

You don’t have to spend a fortune to become successful. Remember, you’re not the only affiliate marketer out there. There are literally thousands of affiliate marketers selling thousands and thousands of different products. Many of these products are aimed at affiliate marketers and some of them can be quite useful. However, if you spend all of your money buying products from other affiliate marketers, youll have little profit to show for all your hard work. Besides, there is a ton of free information available online to aspiring affiliate marketers.
Thats not to say that you shouldnt purchase an ebook, a video, or anything else that can help you with your affiliate marketing career. Just limit your choices to those things that are really necessary to your career and dont fall for every pitch page you see.
Affiliate Marketing Software
There are various affiliate marketing software packages on the market that can help you keep track of your affiliate marketing business, and again, some of these are quite useful and extremely convenient. If you can afford to purchase software, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing so. Just realize that it is not absolutely necessary, especially for the struggling affiliate marketer on a budget. You can certainly use a spreadsheet application to keep track of your business and essentially achieve the same results.
Some aspiring affiliate marketers have spent far more on affiliate marketing paraphernalia than theyll ever make in commissions. This may be because they fall for sales pitches that promise a great deal of revenue for very little work. It really doesnt work this way. In order to be a successful affiliate marketer, it will take a lot of hard work and it will also take some time. Nothing happens overnight.
Find a Mentor
One of the smartest things that any entrepreneur can do is to find someone successful to emulate and that is true of affiliate marketers as well. While there are countless claims of affiliate marketing success on the Internet, some of the most successful affiliate marketers have built up untarnished reputations and some of those successful affiliate marketers offer coaching programs, ebooks, videos, and other guidance to the new affiliate marketer. Even if you cant afford to or dont wish to spend money to learn from them, many of them have websites that offer sound advice. Take advantage of their expertise.
Making sound business decisions is as important to the affiliate marketer as it is to any business owner. Think carefully before you let go of your hard earned money and do your research to ensure you are getting the most for your money.
